History
The island formed from silt accretion in the Bay of Bengal in the 1950s and was originally known as Char Osman. It was renamed Nijhum Dwip ("silent island") and declared a national park in 2001 to protect its spotted deer, which had been introduced from the Sundarbans in the 1970s.
