History
Once a small Arakanese fishing settlement called Panowa, the town was renamed after Captain Hiram Cox, a British East India Company officer who resettled Rakhine refugees here in the 1790s. It grew into Bangladesh’s flagship beach resort from the 1960s onward as roads and hotels reached the coast.

- Swim only at flagged, lifeguard-patrolled points (Laboni, Sugandha) - rip currents are dangerous elsewhere.
- Arrive for sunset around Kolatoli or Laboni Point when the tide is out for the widest sand.
- Winter (Nov–Feb) is calmest; monsoon surf is dramatic but swimming is riskier.
