History
Rakhine Buddhist refugees fleeing Arakan settled here in the late 18th century and built the Kuakata Rakhine temple that still stands today. The beach’s rare east–west orientation, letting visitors watch both sunrise and sunset from the same spot, turned it into a tourist destination from the 1990s onward.
