The best window for Mahasthangarh is Nov – Mar. November to February is the easiest season for travel across Bangladesh generally - cool and dry - while the monsoon between June and September is when the haors, waterfalls and hills are at their most dramatic.

History
Identified with the ancient city of Pundranagara, Mahasthangarh is referenced in a Brahmi inscription from the Mauryan era around the 3rd century BCE, making it the oldest known urban site in Bangladesh. The citadel was occupied continuously through the Gupta, Pala and Sultanate periods, leaving layers of ruins still being excavated today.

- Stop at the Mahasthangarh Museum first to see finds excavated from the mound.
- Wear sturdy shoes - much of the citadel area is uneven, grassy ground.
