Built by the Pala king Dharmapala in the late 8th century, Somapura Mahavihara was once the largest Buddhist monastery south of the Himalayas and a centre of learning that drew monks from as far as Tibet and Southeast Asia. Systematic excavation began in the 1920s, and the site was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985.
