History
Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University was established in 1998, upgraded from the earlier Institute of Postgraduate Medicine and Research (IPGMR), as the country's first specialised postgraduate medical university. It was created to concentrate advanced clinical training, specialist degrees and medical research under one institution rather than spreading them across general hospitals. It has since become the leading centre for FCPS, MD and MS postgraduate medical qualifications in Bangladesh.

The Shahbagh campus in central Dhaka is built around a large teaching hospital complex, with dedicated institutes for cardiology, neurosciences, kidney disease, and burn and plastic surgery.
