History
Jagannath University's roots go back to Jagannath School, founded in 1858, later Jagannath College, one of the oldest educational institutions in the Indian subcontinent. It functioned for decades as a constituent college of Dhaka University before being upgraded to a fully independent public university in 2005. Located in the heart of Old Dhaka, it retains a strong sense of historical continuity with the city's oldest schooling traditions.
