History
Begum Rokeya University was established in 2008 in Rangpur, named after the pioneering feminist writer and educator Begum Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain, who was born in the region. It was created to give northern Bangladesh's Rangpur division its own comprehensive public university. It has grown into the main general public university for the region, with a particular emphasis on women's access to higher education in keeping with its namesake's legacy.
