History
The University of Rajshahi was established in 1953, becoming the second public university in East Pakistan after Dhaka, to extend higher education to the northern region of Bengal. Its founding built on the region's earlier Rajshahi College tradition and it grew quickly into a major centre for the humanities and sciences. It played a significant role in the Language Movement and the 1971 Liberation War, and today it is the largest university by area in Bangladesh.

Its roughly 753-acre campus is the largest of any Bangladeshi university, laid out with wide tree-lined boulevards, a central Shaheed Minar, botanical and zoological gardens, and more than a dozen residential halls.
