History
Comilla University was established in 2006 to give the greater Cumilla region, historically home to the pioneering Comilla Model of rural development pursued by the Bangladesh Academy for Rural Development, its own public general university. It started with a small number of arts and science departments and has since broadened into business and social science. It draws heavily on students from the wider south-eastern Cumilla-Noakhali-Feni belt.

The university's campus at Kotbari, Cumilla, sits close to the Bangladesh Academy for Rural Development, on rolling terrain typical of the Lalmai hills, with newer academic buildings added as enrolment has grown.
